We are pleased to have supported Harbour Energy by advising on the land elements for the Viking Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Pipeline development consent order (DCO) application, which has been granted development consent by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The Viking CCS Pipeline comprises a newly constructed onshore pipeline designed to transport carbon dioxide from the Immingham industrial area to the Theddlethorpe region along the Lincolnshire coast, where it will integrate with the existing Lincolnshire Offshore Gas Gathering System pipeline.

The Pipeline is a crucial component of the wider Viking CCS project, designed to safely, securely and cost-effectively capture and transport carbon dioxide from the Immingham facility (via the consented onshore pipeline and existing offshore pipeline) to depleted gas reservoirs under the Southern North Sea, with the aim to store up to 10 million tonnes of UK carbon dioxide emissions per year by 2030, with initial storage capacity of 300 million tonnes.

Based in the Humber region – the most industrialised and highest carbon dioxide emitting region in the UK – the project will play a key part in helping the UK strive for a low-carbon future by utilising existing infrastructure and depleted gas fields.

Our project team was made up of director and head of compulsory purchase James Dewey, technical director David Strafford, principal surveyor William Pearson, senior land liaison officer James McInnerny and land referencing consultant Nick Foulkes.

James Dewey commented: “We are pleased to have supported Harbour Energy with securing development consent. Not only is the Viking CCS project a significant milestone towards the UK achieving net-zero but also extremely beneficial for the Humber region and wider economy, bringing inward investment and employment opportunities. This was a brilliant collaborative effort and a great example of the successful work our team is delivering for clients across the energy sector.”
